Antonio Cavallo
Antonio Cavallo has been running Masseria Altemura since 2004, looking after both the viticultural and oenological areas. His dream is for the estate to express the potential of Apulian winemaking to the full, with a production philosophy based on highlighting the qualities of indigenous grape varieties and on having total control over the production process that lies behind the quality of the wines, from the splendidly manicured vineyards to the bottle.
The property is located in Salento in the heart of Apulia, approximately an hour from Lecce. The property has 300 hectares, 130 of which are planted in vines.
With an elevation of 70m above sea level, the region's soil is a mixture of clay and chalky gravel. It has a maritime climate, characterised by warm days, cool nights and northerly winds. Temperatures range on average from 9°C in the winter and 27°C in the summer.
Sustainability
At the estate we are experimenting with the reintroduction of alberello vine training for Primitivo, using the traditional method of grafting in the vineyard, with plants produced via ‘massal selection’ in our vineyards.
Biodiversity: we preserve part of the local fauna and flora by maintaining 88 hectares of arable land and 40 hectares of olive groves.
